Complete Travel Guide From Karachi To Khunjerab Top China Border

 Overview

Pakistan is a fantastic place to explore. The country is full of ancient sites and beautiful landscapes, including the Himalayas, the mountains of Balochistan, and the desert areas of Sindh and Punjab.

KKH, Gilgit Baltistan

The capital city, Islamabad, is one of the largest cities in the world with a population of over 13 million people. It has many parks and gardens, mosques, and palaces built during British rule that you can visit on foot or by car or taxi.

You can also get off the beaten path to some great places like Gwadar Port City which was built in 2010 by China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project for USD 500 million. The port city has hotels, restaurants, shops, and banks which are all open 24 hours a day so you can shop around whenever you want.

Pakistan has an area of 803940 sq km, from the Arabian sea to the ranges of Hindukush, which is in Gilgit Baltistan people from different cultures and norms live here in Pakistan, it also has an urban society and rural society. so people from urban areas visit the northern areas of Pakistan during their vacations because the northern areas are having mountains and are comparatively beautiful compared to the big cities located on the south side of Pakistan. but people from the north visit big cities like Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, etc, for their livelihood and other basic necessities.

So it's important to have knowledge of the route and destinations to have a safe and sound journey, therefore Pakistan travel guide always tries to provide you the authentic information about the destinations and route maps.

Journey from Karachi

Pre-journey checklist

As we know, Karachi is the last (after that it's the Arabian sea) and the biggest city in Pakistan, and most people travel north by their own cars, but lots of people use public transport as well.

So there are a few ways people can travel from Karachi to north

By airplane

if you are traveling from Karachi to Islamabad, you can choose different airlines, i.e, air blue, PIA, serene airs, fly Jinnah, and shaheen air. Still, if you wish to travel by air to Gilgit Baltistan, you need to switch airlines from Islamabad because PIA is the only airway you can travel to Chitral and Gilgit (the fare from khi to isl., 17000-20000, its differs time to time). Still, there is one more option, one can directly fly from Karachi to Skardu by PIA, so you don't need to switch it from Islamabad. the fare is approximately 30 thousand per person.
so we recommend you to directly travel to Skardu from Karachi by airplane and then start your journey towards more destinations in Gilgit Baltistan we will guide you more below.

By train (best train service)

Traveling by train is a good and affordable solution for those who wish to visit the north but the same scenario for train travelers as well they need to change their train journey and need travel by bus from Rawalpindi to Gilgit because no train service is so far initiated from Islamabad to Gilgit or Chitral.

Better train service

There are different train services available to travel from Karachi or sindh to Punjab or Peshawar, below listed train services
  • Green line
  • Rehman baba express
  • Pakistan express
  • Awam express
  • Tazgham express
  • Khyber express
But the best of all these is the green line, it's comparatively well and with AC so you can avoid the bad smells all the way.

By Bus or By Public Transport

we have a variety of choices when we talk about bus services to travel to Islamabad or any other city from Karachi. Still, some of the bus services are totally outdated to travel with. Few services are very high class, because they provide food and drink during the journey and the spots where they stop the bus for food or rest are clean and hygienic, so you must prefer these services to experience a quality trip.
There are a few top-quality bus services
  • Kainat Travels
  • Faisal Movers
  • Daewoo Express
So you can travel with them without any worry.

By self-transport

In comparison to other modes of transportation, apart from an airplane, self-transport is the best way to travel anywhere in the world because it allows you to travel at your own pace, stop anywhere for a break, stay the night while traveling, and arrive at your destination relatively earlier. But if you are not fully prepared for it, if you are not a fully qualified driver, or if you are not well familiar with the roads, it may be really dangerous.
Because Gilgit may be at a high altitude or have slops, you need a car of at least 1300cc or more to travel smoothly on all types of roads.
Cruise Control :
if your car has cruise control that could be a good addition to your luxury drive because on the motorway you can easily use that option while driving & enjoy the ride.
The sunroof:
it is one more option to enjoy the trip to the fullest because you can't take good pictures or videos from sideways, so with the sunroof, you can easily take fantastic photography.
In our travel guide, we want you to learn about taking good pictures & videos for good memories.

Some precautions you must take before leaving by your own car.

Since this may be a very lengthy journey, you need first to get your car and other equipment ready for a long journey. Consequently, the vehicle must first undergo a Pre-checkup and maintenance, that must include,
  • Change engine oil
  • Check lights, because you will be driving at night as well
  • Tunning is mandatory
  • Tool kit for vehicle
  • Change old tyres.
  • Take an extra fuel container with you
  • Check the horn, it can be useful in the journey.
  • Travel guide booklet or google maps.
  • A good internet package
  • A Scom sim, (you can get this sim when you reached Gilgit)
  • Some dry kinds of foods and dry fruits
So these are must-check options before you leave for the journey because you could need any of these at any time and there will be no one else to help you out.

Preferred times for starting your journey from Karachi

Since the highway travels through both cities and other residential areas, you should strive to reach the motorway at a time when there is less traffic on the road. The route from Karachi to Sukkur is a highway after that, and it ends in Islamabad. Therefore, the best time to go for your trip is after Fajjar namaz. It is also recommended that you start your trip with the recitation of the Holy Quran to make it even safer.
If you depart home at 4 am, it will take you 1.5 hours to reach Hyderabad. From there, you may get to the cafe in morro for breakfast at approximately 7.30 am.
At roughly 10 a.m. after breakfast, I'll arrive at the Sukkur highway terminal. To avoid falling asleep while driving on the motorway, take a quick break, pour another cup of tea, and then resume your drive.
Because there aren't many petrol stations on the motorway, you must make sure your petrol tank is filled before entering the motorway. Additionally, because there aren't many gas stations on the highway, you must have a fuel container on hand.
After that, depending on your driving speed, your next stop will be in Multan at roughly 3.30 p.m. You must stay there for the night if you get to Multan at approximately 6 or 7 pm. The greatest hotel for lodging and dining is Wasaib we also recommend good rest and dinner.
so if you left Multan around 4pm, you can reach Islamabad at 10pm at night, but it's good for you to take a rest in Multan and start your journey the next day. while your stay in Multan don't forget to enjoy (Multani Halwa).

After Islamabad :

Once more, early dawn is the ideal time to begin your excursion, so you The important thing is that you must take a break before leaving for Naran, khagan, so you have to spend 2 days in Islamabad to enjoy the beauty of the capital and to begin a new journey. There are many places you can visit and enjoy your day in Islamabad, such as walking through the Margalla Hills, the Faisal Mosque, etc.

In order to enjoy the beauty of Mansehra and the surrounding places as well as the beauty of the highway, early in the morning is the best time to begin the journey. Arrive in Mansehra's lush mountains in time for breakfast and spend some time alone in the mountains.
then continue traveling in the direction of Balakot.

one important thing is, if you are going to visit Murree, you can study my blog on Barban & murree to know more about Murree and Barban. you will have to go another way, and it will take 2 hours from the capital to reach there, after murree there are burban and then the route will take you to Azad kashmir, Muzaffarabad after 5 hours drive, depending upon how you drive, and which kind of transport you choose.

One other way exists; it will take you through Kohistan, Dasu, and Chilas before leading you to Gilgit city after a 12-hour journey from the capital. However, this is a quite lengthy route, and you can use it in the winter since the abuser summit is blocked by snowfall.

If you only want to travel to babusar, Naran kaghan, then it will be perfect for you to visit this area and spend 2 or 3 days.

Things you can enjoy in Naran, kaghan

There are some fun activities you can enjoy in naran
  • rafting (summers)
  • snowfall (winters)
  • mountain road drive
  • camping ( every season)
  • horse riding
  • hiking

After you are done with your stay in naran kaghan you can leave for Gilgit Baltistan through babusar top
One of the most crucial things to remember when passing through Babusar is that the road is extremely hazardous, traveling up and down with constant slop for an hour's drive. Because anything awful might happen, it's important to maintain control of the car and drive slowly, don't apply the brakes excessively, and attempt to manage on gears. This is because your vehicle's tyres could become hot and the brake could potentially cease working, that is why travel guides are always important to know the consequences before one physically faces them.

Gilgit city may be reached after babusar in 4 to 5 hours, although there are two routes that separate before getting there: one goes to Skardu, and the other goes to the Astor Valley, which is another stunning location in Gilgit Baltistan.

Gilgit city

Gilgit, also known as Gilgit, is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, a former princely state of the British Raj and the current region of Pakistan. The city has a population of over 300,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the country.

Gilgit is located at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level where it borders Skardu to the north, Hunza to the south, and Chilas to the east. The city is protected by Hunza Valley National Park and KKH ( Karakoram Highway), which was built in 1974 by then prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

rough roads of GB, only 4/4 of vehicles can drive here

From main Gilgit city, the areas will divide into two direction
  • Hunza
  • Ghizer
After a six-hour travel from gilgit, you will arrive at Khunjerab Top, but you will need to spend the night traveling there or change vehicles and bring a four-wheel drive vehicle. Pakistan-China border The route to Khunjerab, or KKH, is decent, and you can find a hotel to stay in any location with ease, but we advise going to Khyber Gojal or gulmit or any region nearby till nightfall and staying there because you will have to travel fewer miles the following morning.

If you select ghizer valley from Gilgit city, you will see different lakes and the beauty of ponyail, ishkomen, Yasin & phander valley. but the road is not that good so if you want to experience off-roading or something different you can visit ghizer and enjoy your trip

ghizer GB
