Lung Lake, which lies in Larkana district, at one time covered a vast area and has the distinction of being visited by several heads of states and political luminaries such as Jamal Abdul Nasser, King Faisal, Yasir Arafat, the Shah of Iran, and many other prominent personalities have enjoyed duck shooting at one time or another.
The lake in the middle of lush farmlands in winters is home to a few hundred thousand winter migratory birds that can be seen at close quarters because of the approach roads and the view points built according to a well thought-out plan.
The lake has a smaller area now compared to what it was in years gone by because a lot of land under the water was reclaimed by farmers. Now some of the area is being restored so that the size of the lake will begin to get progressively bigger. There is a beautiful rest house close by. Night stay facilities are available far a nominal fee.
Lung lake an important wetland of Sindh, located in district Larkana was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1982. The lake is spread over 97 acres. Continuos efforts of Sindh Wildlife Department for habitat management and its improvement has made the lake an ideal refuge for migratory waterfowl in the wintering months. Every year, the lake receives large variety of migratory waterfowl because of its location on Indus flyway. It is considered as the best wetland in northern Sindh. Habitat of the lake can be divided into three types; Open water with typha and Juncus on the edge, swampy area dominated by Tamarix and surrounding rice fields with predominant Juncus.
Presently situated on Indus flood plain, Lung Lake was once in the river bed. It is fed by tube well and a small canal. An earthen embankment on the periphery forms boundaries of the lake, which normally dries out in summer when the temperature varies between 100-120oF.
There is a small rest house, an education and research station and hideouts for bird watchers.
