Quench your thirst

With of course a lot of options available to quench your thirst with canned drinks made by local as well as international companies, Pakistan has many traditional drinks too that you can choose in winter as well as in summer to satisfy your body needs.

Coffee is adored by many in Pakistan especially during chilly winters but ‘tea’ is the heart favourite of majority of people — black tea and green tea (sabz chai) are easily available in local hotels (dhabas) and in modern style restaurants too. In addition to this a special chai known as doodh patti is also available in liquid and powdered form, that you can simply mix with hot water to make tea.

Pakistan is a warm country and during most part of the year, weather remains hot and scorching sun rays compel people to often prefer cold drinks over hot ones. And the choices besides canned drinks are many — the traditional drinks of course, are sure to win the hearts of locals as well as of foreign people.

Sugar cane juice is the one that is commonly available in every bazaar — a thela wala having a machine fixed on his thela to extract sugar cane juice, surrounded with a crowd of people ordering glasses of sugar cane juice, is a common sight in local bazaars. Sugar cane juice is very satisfying and nutritious for hot summers of Pakistan.

Lassi, of course is yet another desi style drink which is a mixture of curd and water — it can be made sweet or salty — both tastes are very much adored by young and oldies alike. Besides these, lemonade (called as sikanjibeen by the locals), Rooh Afza, Sanadal ka sharbat, almond sharbat (badaam ka sharbat) and gola ganda (crushed ice with sweet syrups in various colours) are delicious thirst satisfiers and people belonging to all age groups and all strata of society love to drink them during summers.

In addition to these traditional drinks, milk shakes of various fresh fruits are also liked by people — mango shake, banana shake, apple shake, pomegranate shake and strawberry shake are some of the many liquid delights that people usually love to have with breakfast to ensure a healthy and happy time throughout the day.

As Pakistan is an Islamic country so alcohol is prohibited here and you won’t find bars here but for Christian community, some super stores (having licence to sell alcohol) carry whiskeys and bear bottles and cans of various brands. (This info is especially to guide the foreigners who are used to have alcohol with meal.)
