Location
Kasur town is situated 55 km south of District Lahore. The district lies from30 -40’ to 31—20’ north latitudes and 73 – 38’ to 74 – 41 east longitudes.
Kasur, one of the districts of Punjab province, is bounded on the north by Lahore district, on the south and east by the Indian districts of Feroz Pur and Amritsar respectively, and on the west by Sahiwal district. Kasur city is located on the Feroz Pur road at a distance of about 55 km. from Lahore to the south and about 25 km from Feroz Pur, situated in India to its north. Kasur is well connected to Lahore by road and also by rail, which takes off from the Raiwind junction and runs up to Lodhran. Before partition, it was also linked by rail with Amritsar and Feroz Pur city in India (Government of Pakistan, 1980).
As per Punjab Development Statistics, 2000, there are 377 broiler and 41 layer poultry farms in the district having rearing capacity of 5304 and 587 thousand birds respectively. There are also 4 breeding farms having rearing capacity of 146 thousand birds.
The Kasur district covers a gross area of 981,702 acres of which 705,224 acres is classified as cultivable land. Under irrigated agriculture condition, the soil is very productive. Rice, sugarcane, cotton, various fodder, maize and vegetables are the main crops in summer, while wheat is the only dominant crop in winter (rabbi).
Rural & Urban Distribution
The urban population was 542,391 or 22.8 percent of the total population of the district which grew at an average rate of 2.9 percent during 1981-98 and had decreased from 4.8 percent observed during 1972-81. There are three municipal committees and six town committees in the district
There were 637 Mauzas (a smallest revenue unit) in 1998, of which 103 had population over 5 thousand, 210 had 2 to 5 thousand, 110 had 1 to 2 thousand, 201 had under one thousand person while 13 were un-inhabited.
Boundaries
Kasur is bounded on the north by Lahore district, on the east and south –east by India, on the south-west by Okara district and on the north-west by Nankana Sahib (Old Sheikhupura) district.
Weather
The city has extremes of climate; the summer season begins from April and continues upto September. June is the hottest month. The mean maximum and minimum temperature for this month are about 40 and 27 degree centigrade respectively. The winter seasons lasts from November to March. January is the coldest month. The mean maximum and minimum temperatures for the coldest month are 20 and 6 degree centigrade respectively.
Rainfall
Towards the end of June monsoon conditions appear and during the following two and a half months spell of rainy season alternates with intervals of sultry weather. The winter rain falls during January, February and March ranging from 23 to 31 millimeters. Details data on temperature and precipitation is not available for Kasur. These are however, available for the nearest meteorological station Lahore which as close proxy of the district and can be easily found.
